Key Expansion Module Power Information

The Cisco IP Phone 8800 Key Expansion Module increases the amount of power that the phone consumes. Although Power over Ethernet (PoE) from the switch may provide enough power to meet the needs of a phone that has multiple key expansion modules attached, use of a power cube may be necessary. The tables that follow help you understand whether your PoE equipment can provide the necessary power.

The Cisco IP Phone 8800 Key Expansion Module power consumption and power scheme is:

Power Consumption

48V DC, 5W per key expansion module

Power Scheme

The phone can power one key expansion module directly. For more information, see the following tables.

If you are charging a smartphone or a tablet, note the following:

  •

Side USB: Up to 500mA/2.5W charging

  •

Back USB: Fast charging, Supports up to 2.1A/10.5W charging

Note

When you attach more than one key expansion module to the Cisco IP Phone 8861, 8865, and 8865NR, the fast-charge feature that uses the back USB port is not supported. In this scenario, the back port will slow-charge the device.

Access Key Expansion Module Setup

After you install one or more key expansion modules on the phone, the phone automatically recognizes the key expansion modules.

When multiple key expansion modules are attached, they are numbered according to the order in which they connect to the phone:

  • Key expansion module 1 is the KEM closest to the phone.

  • Key expansion module 2 is the KEM in the middle.

  • Key expansion module 3 is the KEM farthest to the right.

You can select a key expansion module, and then choose one of the following softkeys:

  • Exit: Returns to the Applications menu.

  • Details: Provides details about the selected key expansion module.

  • Setup: Allows you to configure the brightness of the selected key expansion module. Setting the brightness can also be done using the Preferences menu on the phone.

1    On the phone, press Applications  .
2    Press Accessories.

All properly installed and configured key expansion modules display in the list of accessories.

View Key Expansion Modules in Cisco Cloud Collaboration Management

After one or more key expansion modules (KEM) are installed and set up on a phone, they are automatically added to the Devices page in Cisco Cloud Collaboration Management. Here, you can take a look at the accessories associated with a device.

From Cisco Cloud Collaboration Management, select Devices. You get a quick view of which phones have key expansion modules and how many are installed.

Reset the Key Expansion Module to Factory Defaults

This procedure gives the steps for the key expansion module factory reset.

1    Power on the key expansion module, press Page 1, and do not release the key. When the LCD turns white, continue pressing Page 1 for at least one second.
2    Release Page 1; LEDs should turn red. Immediately press Page 2 and continue pressing Page 2 for at least one second.
3    Release Page 2; all LEDs should turn amber.
4    Press Lines 5, 14, 1, 18, 10, and 9 in sequence.

The LCD should turn blue, and the spinning loader icon displays in the center.

The key expansion module resets.
