Customize Message Waiting Indicator (MWI) policy

This Help article is for Cisco Wireless Phone 9821 registered to Cisco Unified Communications Manager (Unified CM).

By default, the Indicator light (LED) on Cisco Wireless Phone 9821 blinks rapidly in green to indicate new voice messages. You can use Cisco Unified CM to customize the visual and audible Message Waiting Indicator (MWI) policies.

In Cisco Unified Communications Manager Administration, select Device > Phone.

Locate the phone that you will set up.

Select the target line from the Association pane.

Navigate to the Line <n> on Device <MAC address> pane.

Configure the Visual Message Waiting Indicator Policy field. Select one of the following options from the drop-down menu:

  • Use system policy—The phone uses the policy that was set at the system level.
  • Light and prompt—Same as Light only.
  • Light only—The LED on the phone blinks rapidly in green to indicate new voice messages. Meanwhile, the 9821 new voicemail icon icon appears on the phone's home screen.
  • Prompt—This setting does not take effect.
  • None—No visual MWI for new voice messages.

Configure the Audible Message Waiting Indicator Policy field. Select one of the following options from the drop-down menu:

  • Off—No audible MWI for new voice messages.
  • On—The users will receive a stutter dial tone when the phone is off hook.

    As a prerequisite, set Dialing Mode to Off-hook Dialing on the Phone Configuration page. Otherwise, this setting does not take effect.

  • Default—The phone uses the default that was set at the system level.

Select Save.

Select Apply Config.
