If you're hosting a meeting where you don't want attendees to know the names of other attendees, such as in a meeting with competing vendors or a support group meeting, schedule meetings to use anonymous names.

The meeting assigns each participant a display name, such as Participant 1.

  • This feature is available on a limited basis. Contact your Customer Success Manager (CSM) or Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) if you want to enable it.

  • We designed this feature to improve privacy in the Webex interface. However, names may still be obtained through intentional inspection of diagnostic logs, network analysis tools, or APIs.

The meeting assigns each participant a display name, such as Participant 1, Participant 2, and so on, when they join the meeting. These anonymous display names replace the real names in places such as the participant list, thumbnail videos, chat, reactions, closed captions, and breakout sessions.

What participants see

When you join a meeting, you'll see the message: Your display name is Participant n so you'll know your display name.

You'll see the real names of the host and any cohosts, and the anonymized display names of other participants.

What hosts and cohosts see

As host or cohost, you can see the real names of a participant by hovering over their anonymized display name in the participants list and thumbnail videos.

Schedule an anonymous meeting

1

Sign in to your Webex site, then select Schedule a meeting.

2

Select Advanced options.

3

In the Anonymous meeting section, turn on the option to anonymize attendee display names.

4

Complete the rest of the meeting details and schedule the meeting.

Limitations

  • To schedule an anonymous meeting, you must schedule it from your Webex site. You can’t schedule an anonymous meeting in Webex App, and you can’t change the Anonymous meeting settings in the app.

  • If you edit the meeting on your Webex site within 10 minutes of the start time, you can’t change the Anonymous meeting setting.

  • If you select Anonymous meeting when you schedule the meeting, Cisco AI Assistant is unavailable.

  • If you join an anonymous meeting using an earlier version of the app, you’re prompted to upgrade or join using your browser.

  • If a participant joins a meeting on another Webex App client, for example, using their browser, and they have an earlier version of Webex App, they may still see the full participant list with real names when they hover over In the meeting Participants panel button. This button appears next to the meeting name in the spaces list. They may also see a full participants list and real names in the Chat tab on the Meeting information page. This page appears when they click the meeting in the spaces list.

  • If your organization uses Hybrid Calendar and some participants are using an earlier version of the app, they may still see the full invitee list with participants' real names on the meeting details page. This page appears when you go to Meetings Meetings icon and click the Calendar tab.

  • Anonymous display names aren't supported in webinars or meetings associated with a space.

  • If a participant joins from a video device, they may see other participants' real names. If you're the host, lock the meeting and prevent anyone from joining the meeting from a device.

  • As a host or cohost, you can edit any participant’s display name by right-clicking the name in the participants list, and clicking Edit display name. Participants can’t edit their own display names.

  • If someone shares a whiteboard during the meeting and a participant opens that same whiteboard from the Whiteboards home tab, the participant may still see other participants' real names when they interact with the whiteboard.

  • After the meeting, only the host and cohost can access the meeting recap. Participants can’t access it.
