Resolving Issues with Streaming Network-Based Recordings After Upload

ISSUE
Users are experiencing difficulties streaming Network-Based Recordings (NBR) after uploading them to the Webex site. This issue has become more prevalent with the announcement that starting with the October (40.10) update, Webex Meetings will default to storing all-new recordings in MP4 format, enhancing the video-centric experience for users.

RESOLUTION
To address the streaming limitation for re-uploaded NBRs, follow the workaround steps below:

  1. Convert the ARF Recording to WMV Format
    • Utilize the Webex Network Recording Player to convert your ARF file into a Windows Media Video (WMV) format.  This step is crucial as WMV files maintain their streaming capability when uploaded to the Webex site | Convert a Cisco Webex Recording to Another Format
  1. Upload the Converted WMV Recording
  2. Stream the Uploaded Recording
    • Post-upload, the WMV recording will be available for streaming on the Webex site, and attendees can watch the recording without downloading it.
CAUSE
The inability to stream recordings after uploading them to the Webex site is due to a known limitation within the Network-Based Recording feature. Recordings that are uploaded post-meeting do not retain their streaming capabilities, which is a restriction of the current Webex infrastructure.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

The transition to MP4 format in the upcoming Webex Meetings 40.10 update is designed to streamline the recording experience and provide users with a more robust set of playback and security features. While this update introduces a new standard for recordings, it is essential to note that existing ARF and WRF recordings will still be accessible for download and playback on the Webex site.
