When Webex App uses your microphone for device detection, no audio is stored or sent to Cisco.

If your Webex administrator manages these settings, they're unavailable for you to change.

1

Click Settings on the navigation sidebar and click Devices > Advanced settings.

2

Under Discover Devices, choose one of the following options:

  • Use my microphone when I search for devices—Your microphone is active when you choose to connect to a device and remains active while connected.

This is the default option for new users.

  • Always listen for devices—Your microphone continuously listens for ultrasound from nearby Webex devices.

When you select this option, your operating system might show a microphone privacy warning. This indicates that Webex is using the microphone to detect nearby systems. No audio is stored or sent to Cisco.

Check Automatically connect to the nearest device to automatically connect to the nearest Webex device in a room.

  • Do not use my microphone—Your microphone isn't used to listen for nearby devices. To connect, search for a device and enter a PIN.
3

Check Use Wi-Fi network to discover nearby devices to use information about Wi-Fi networks in your vicinity to discover nearby Webex devices.

4

Click Save.

Open settings from your profile picture and tap Devices.

Under Device Discovery and Connection, choose one of the following options:

  • Use when I search—The microphone on your phone is active when you choose to connect to a device and remains active while you're connected.

This is the default option for new users.

  • Always listen for devices—The microphone on your phone listens continuously from ultrasound from nearby Webex devices.

When you select this option, your operating system might show a microphone privacy warning. This indicates that Webex is using the microphone to detect nearby systems. No audio is stored or sent to Cisco.

  • Do not use my microphone—The microphone on your phone isn't used to listen for nearby devices.

If you chose Always listen for devices in the previous step, toggle on Use NFC to automatically connect to the nearest Webex device in a room.

If Webex App doesn’t connect to a device in your organization automatically, you can manually connect to the device. Just search for the device in the app and then enter the PIN that appears on the device and you’re connected.

To manually connect to a device outside your organization, connect to it by using a 9-character code and then entering the PIN. The PIN just verifies that you’re connecting to the right device because you have to be close to the device to see the PIN on the screen.

1

In the app header, click Connect to a device to view a list of nearby devices and click Connect to select the device you want to use from the list.

Click Search room or device name to search for a device in your organization by name using either ultrasound or Wi-Fi.

Use Wi-Fi is only available if your administrator has set it up for your organization. Wi-Fi network information is used to present a list of devices that are in range. The app can list up to 5 nearby devices, even when ultrasound connections aren't working. For more information, see Use Wi-Fi network to discover nearby devices in Automatic.

To connect to a device outside your organization, click Connect using 9-character code. Then, enter the code that's on your device and click Next.

2

When the PIN displays on the device, enter it in Webex App. If you're in a meeting room with several people, you all use the same PIN to connect your app to the device.

Enter the PIN that displays on the device. You can’t use the host PIN for meetings.

The PIN remains valid for 5 minutes after it first displays. So, if you make a successful connection, you won't be asked for the PIN in any additional attempts within that 5-minute period.

If you try to connect after 5 minutes, you have to enter a new PIN.

After you connect manually, if you do nothing on the device for 5 minutes, for example, you don't start a call or meeting, change the device's audio volume, or start or stop video on the device, the connection is automatically disconnected and you need to reconnect.
1

Tap Connect to device Devices to view a list of nearby devices and tap Connect to select the device you want to use from the list.

Tap Search room or device name to search for a device in your organization by name. You see a list of recent devices you've connected to previously.

To connect to a device outside your organization, tap Connect using 9-character code. Then, enter the code that's on your device and tap Next.

Once you have connected to a device, the app stays connected to the device while that browser remains open.

When you connect to a Webex Board, you can now open a space from your Webex App on the Webex Board.

If you're using Webex App to make phone calls, you can set your desk phone to be your default option when making calls from the app. Dial a number from your app, and your call goes through your phone. If you have multiple phone lines, you can change the active line for calling.

Select Connect to a Device and select your phone from one of the Personal Devices choices.

If you're connected to your desk phone but want to use Webex App instead, click and then select My Computer before dialing.

What to do next

Create a custom name for your desk phone. Hover over the phone description and click to edit. Unique descriptions are especially useful when you have more than one desk phone connected to your app.
