Make an intercom call

You can use an intercom line to make a one-way audio call in which the recipient's phone answers the call automatically with mute activated (whisper mode).

Your phone initiates the intercom call in the whisper mode until the recipient answers it. In the whisper mode, the other person can hear you, but you can't hear them.

After receiving the intercom call, the recipient can start two-way audio (connected state) to allow for further conversation.

If you are already on an active call and you make an intercom call, the active call is placed on hold.

Before you begin

Your administrator has configured an intercom line on your phone.

Select Intercom Intercom icon.

The line name and intercom number display next to the icon. If your administrator assigns a speed dial number to the line, the speed dial number displays following the intercom number.

 
If your intercom line is not configured with a speed-dial number, you will be prompted to enter an intercom number. Then you need to enter a valid intercom number on the search bar.

Listen for the intercom alert tone, then begin speaking.

In the intercom window, you can view the call status and call duration.

Select End call when you finish the call.

On Cisco Desk Phone 9841, 9851, and 9861, you can also press the line key to end the intercom call.

Answer an intercom call

When an intercom call is received, you can see a message that shows a person is whispering to you. At the same time, an audible alert indicates that the intercom call begins. Your phone automatically answers the intercom call with the microphone muted (whisper mode). You can answer an intercom call to talk to the other person.

Before you begin

Select Talk to switch to the connected state. In the connected state, you can speak to the caller.

On Cisco Desk Phone 9841, 9851, and 9861, you can also press the line key to answer the intercom call.

If you're on an active call when an intercom call comes in, answering the intercom call will place the current call on hold. To answer the intercom call, select Talk or Hold & Talk based on your phone model.

(Optional) In the whisper mode, if you want to switch between the home page and the intercom window, do the following actions that's applicable to your phone model.

For 9841, 9851, and 9861 phones Press Home to go to the home page; press the line key to open the intercom window.

for 9871 Tap Hide to go to the home page; tap the line to open the intercom window.

Select End call when you finish the call.

On Cisco Desk Phone 9841, 9851, and 9861, you can also press the line key to end the intercom call.
