Learn how to make calls on your Cisco Wireless Phone 9821. This Help article is for Cisco Wireless Phone 9821 registered to Cisco Unified Communications Manager (Unified CM).

Your Cisco Wireless Phone 9821 functions like a standard phone. You can make outgoing calls and answer incoming calls using the phone.

Make a call

You have different ways to make a call. If your phone has multiple lines configured, you can use a particular line to make a call. The extension that displays on the top left is your currently selected line. If you don't select an extension before you dial a number, then the primary line is used by default.

Make a call using one of the following ways, depending on your preference.

  • Enter a phone number from the Applications view. Press Answer/Send 9821 Answer button or Select.
  • Enter a phone number from the Applications view. Press More 9821 More button and select Call.
  • Access the Phone 9821 Phone app icon app.. Select a line. Enter a phone number and then press Answer/Send.
  • Access the Phone 9821 Phone app icon app.. Select a line. Select a number in the Recents list and then press Call.

(Optional) If you want to make a new call to another person during the current active call, press Hold to put the active call on hold, and then press New call.

According to your administrator's configuration, the New call softkey might appear during the current active call. In this case, you can press the softkey to make a new call directly. Once you press the softkey, the current active call will be put on hold automatically.

(Optional) If you want to return to the Applications view during an active call, press the left arrow on the Navigation Cluster.

What to do next

Do one of the following actions to end a call:

  • Press More 9821 More button and select End call.
  • Press Power/End Call 9821power button.

Make an emergency call

Use your phone to make an emergency call, similar to any other call.

Before you begin

Your administrator must configure the phone to allow emergency calls while the device is locked.

Use the keypad to enter your emergency number.

You can make an emergency call from your phone even if it is locked. When you begin dialing an emergency number, a list of emergency numbers appears. These numbers are not selectable; you must enter the complete emergency number manually. If you attempt to dial a number that is not on the emergency number list, the phone will return to the home screen and display the message Invalid emergency number.

Press Answer/Send 9821 Answer button, the Select button, or the Call softkey.

Make a call with a headset

You can make a call using a headset. If you disconnect the headset during a call, the phone continues the call on the speakerphone.

Before you begin

You have a wired or Bluetooth headset connected to the phone.

Access the Phone 9821 Phone app icon app.

(Optional) Select a line.

Enter a phone number.

Press Answer/Send 9821 Answer button.

Make a call with the phone speaker

You can make a call with the speakerphone built into the phone.

Press and hold Speakerphone 9821 Speaker button to activate the speaker.

Dial the phone number.

Press Answer/Send 9821 Answer button to place your call.

Press and hold Speakerphone again to turn off speaker mode.

Make a call with the desktop charger speaker

When your phone is in the desktop charger, you automatically use the speakerphone built into the charger. If you remove the phone from the charger when you are on the call, hold the phone to your ear to hear the call.

Dial the phone number.

Press Answer/Send 9821 Answer button to place your call.

Make a call with a phone or video address (URI dialing)

Sometimes, instead of just having someone’s phone number, you might also have a alphanumeric phone or video address that you can use to place the call instead. These addresses might look like an email address, such as username1@example.com, or it might contain numbers like username2@209.165.200.224.

Access the Phone app.

(Optional) Select a line.

Press More 9821 More button and select ABC, and you’ll be able to enter text using the keypad.

Press a number on the keypad to see the available options, and then press the number again to move through the choices.

For example, press One (1) 9821 number 1 button three times to enter the @ symbol.

Press Answer/Send 9821 Answer button.

Make a call to a favorite number

You can easily call a contact in your Favorites list from the Contacts app or from the home screen.

Before you begin

  • You must set up a favorite (a frequently-dialed number) in your Favorites list in the Contacts 9821 Contacts app icon app.
  • You need to know the index number assigned to the favorite.

Do one of the following:

  • Access the Contacts 9821 Contacts app icon app and select Favorites. Highlight a favorite entry and press Select.
  • From the Application view or Line view, do one of the following:
    • If the index number has a single digit, press and hold the index number before the favorite dial entry.

      For example, if the favorite is assigned to index number 1, press and hold 1 9821 number 1 button until the phone makes the call.

    • If the index number has two digits, press the first digit and then press and hold the second digit.

      For example, if the favorite is assigned to index number 10, press 1 9821 number 1 button, and then press and hold 0 9821 number zero buttonuntil the phone makes the call.

Redial a number

You can call the most recently dialed phone number from the Phone app.

Access the Phone 9821 Phone app icon app.

Press Redial or press Answer/Send 9821 Answer button twice.

Your phone dials the most recent number from a line that just placed a call.

Make a Speed Dial call

Before you begin

Your administrator must set up a Speed Dial line for you.

Access the Phone 9821 Phone app icon app.

Highlight a Speed dial 9821 Speed dial icon line.

Press Select.

Make a call using Abbreviated dials

Before you begin

  • Your administrator has configured abbreviated dials for your phone.
  • You need to know the index number assigned to the abbreviated dial.

Make a call using an abbreviated dial in either of the following ways, depending on your preference.

  • Option 1:

    Enter the abbreviated dial index from the Applications view. Press More 9821 More button and select Abbr dial.

  • Option 2:

    Press Answer/Send 9821 Answer button from the Applications view. Enter the abbreviated dial index. Press More 9821 More button and select Abbr dial.

    This option functions only when your administrator has set the Dialing mode to On-hook Dialing.

  • Option 3:

    1. From the Line view, press More 9821 More button and select New call.
    2. Press More and select Abbr dial.
    3. Enter the abbreviated dial index.
    4. Press More and select Abbr dial.

Dial an international number

You can dial international calls when you prefix the phone number with a plus (+) sign.

Press and hold Asterisk (*) 9821 asterisk nutton for at least 1 second.

The plus (+) sign is displayed as the first digit in the phone number. If you are off-hook, you hear that the dial tone changes when the + signs is displayed.

Dial the number.

Press Answer/Send 9821 Answer button.

Use call back

If you find that the person you called is busy or doesn't answer your call, you can choose to be notified with a special ringtone and a notification message later when the person is available.

Before you begin

Your administrators has configured this feature on your phone.

When you are making a call to a person who is busy or doesn't answer your call, press Call back.

(Optional) In the next screen, do one of the following actions:

  • Press Cancel to deactivate the call back, and then press Exit to exit the confirmation screen.
  • Press Exit to exit the confirmation screen directly. In this case, the call back is still activated.

When the target line is idle, you will hear the ringtone and see the message. Press Dial to make the call again.
