Learn about a shared line and how to work with a shared line on your Cisco Wireless Phone 9821. This Help article is for Cisco Wireless Phone 9821 registered to Cisco Unified Communications Manager (Unified CM).
You can share a single phone number with one or more of your coworkers. For example, as an administrative assistant, you might be responsible for screening calls for the person that you support.
Shared lines function similarly to your primary line. However, when using a shared line, be aware of the following characteristics:
-
The shared phone number appears on all phones that share the number.
-
If your coworker is making a call, the shared line on your phone shows the Remote active
icon together with the
Shared - Callingstatus. Once the shared call is answered, the status changes toShared - Active. -
If your coworker answers a call or is in a conference call, the shared line on your phone shows the Remote active
icon together with the
Shared - Activestatus. You can add yourself to the ongoing call through the shared line. -
If your coworker puts a call on hold, the shared line on your phone shows the Remote on hold
icon together with the Shared - On holdstatus. You can resume the held call through the shared line. -
If your coworker enables the privacy feature, status of the shared line is shown as follows:
- When the shared line is on a call, it displays the Remote active
icon. - When the shared line is on hold, it displays the
Shared - On holdstatus, from which you can resume the call. - For all other states, the shared line displays the Idle
icon only.
- When the shared line is on a call, it displays the Remote active
Actions that you can perform on a shared line

- Select Meet me to host or join a scheduled conference call.
- Select Record to start recording the call.
Add yourself to a call on a shared line (Barge and cBarge)
You or your coworker can join an ongoing call on the shared line to initiate a conference call. If the ongoing call is a conference, you or your coworker can also join the ongoing conference call on the shared line.
If a user with whom you share a line turns on the privacy feature, you can't see their line status and you can't add yourself to their call.
Barge uses the built-in conference bridge on the target phone (the phone that is being barged) which limits the number of users allowed to barge. A barge conference supports up to three parties. The cBarge feature uses a shared conference resource which allows more than one person to barge into the call. A cBarge conference supports the maximum number of parties provisioned on the centralized conference resource. For more information, see Barge and cBarge.
Before you begin
- Your administrator has configured the barge feature on the phone.

Press Barge. When connected, you will be part of an ongoing call or conference. If you join an ongoing call, the caller ID remains unchanged. If you join a conference call, the caller ID is displayed as Conference. When someone parks the call, you will be disconnected automatically. This behavior doesn't apply to barged conference calls. |
Enable privacy for shared lines on your phone
The Privacy feature prevents other users of a shared line from viewing your call details and history. Additionally, it blocks barge-in attempts on your active calls.
Privacy settings apply to all shared lines on your phone. When enabled, these settings impact all users who share the line. Other users will only be aware of the following statuses:
- When the shared line is on a call, it displays the Remote active
icon. - When the shared line is on hold, it displays the
Shared - On holdstatus, from which you can resume the call. - For all other states, the shared line displays the Idle
icon only.
Enabling the Privacy feature on a shared line does not restrict your ability to make or receive calls on that line.
Before you begin
