By default, Personal Identifiable Information (PII) isn’t recorded in system logs. However, PII data may be captured by third party components. Before logs are sent, any PII data that may have been captured, is removed automatically. When data is removed like this, it’s replaced with a note that something has been removed for privacy reasons.

From the Device settings menu, you can enable Extended logging . This automatically enables PII logging too. Or, you can enable PII logging only.

There is a list of PII data that might be collected when extended and/or PII logging is enabled, at the bottom of this article.

  • Extended logging . When toggled on, a full capture of network traffic is logged, including PII data.

  • PII logging . When toggled on, only PII is logged. This applies whether you toggle extended logging on or not.

When extended logging and/or PII logging is enabled, PII is collected. However, when a user sends a log, the PII is always removed automatically (and replaced with a note) before sending.

Administrators can download logs via a device’s web interface. In this case, any PII data collected will not be removed first.

Extended logging has a timeout due to storage limitations. Enabled on its own, PII logging does not timeout. Once you’ve enabled extended logging or PII logging, disabling the setting does not remove PII that’s already been collected. It will remain until the logs are overwritten, but if any of those logs are sent, PII will be automatically removed before sending.
