Use closed captions in phone calls and Webex meetings on 9800/8875 (Webex Calling)

Turn on closed captions to show the real-time transcription during phone calls and Webex meetings. This Help article is for Cisco Desk Phone 9861, Cisco Desk Phone 9871, and Cisco Video Phone 8875 registered to Webex Calling.

As a participant in a phone call or a Webex hybrid meeting, you can choose to show or hide the real-time translation and transcription on the phone screen by simply pressing the softkey Captions or tapping the soft button Closed captions Closed captions soft button (depending on your phone model).

When enabled, the closed captions will display just above the softkeys or soft buttons.

The following phone models support this feature:

  • Cisco Desk Phone 9861 and 9871
  • Cisco Video Phone 8875

If your phone doesn't show the Captions softkey or the Closed captions soft button soft button during a phone call or a Webex meeting, contact your administrator for support.

Show closed captions

During a phone call or a Webex hybrid meeting, do one of following actions depending on your phone model:

  1. To show captions:

    Press Captions. Highlight Closed captions, and press On.

    Icon for 9871 and 8875 for common topics Tap Closed captions Closed captions soft button and toggle on Closed captions.

  2. Select Caption language and choose the preferred caption language for translations. The system automatically translates a person's speech into transcripts that appear on the bottom of the screen. The default caption language is English.

    The status (on or off) of closed captions and the selected language will be saved automatically for future calls and meetings.

    If no one is speaking, the last caption disappears after 5 seconds.

Limitations

Up to 4 rows can be displayed in the closed captions on the phone screen.

For Webex meetings, maximum of 5 caption languages can be translated from the server. The actual supported number varies depending on the backend limit.

For phone calls, the Captions softkey or the Closed captions soft button soft button is only available on the primary line with a single call.
