Work with a shared line on your phone
This Help article is for Cisco Desk Phone 9800 Series registered to Cisco Unified Communications Manager (Unified CM).
You can share a single phone number with one or more of your coworkers. For example, as an administrative assistant, you might be responsible for screening calls for the person that you support.
When you share a phone number, you can use that phone line just like you would do with any other line.
When working with your shared line, you should be aware of these special characteristics about shared lines:
-
If your coworker is making a call, the shared line on your phone shows the Remote active icon together with the
Shared - Calling
status. Once the shared call is answered, the status changes toShared - Active

If your coworker answers a call or is in a conference call, the shared line on your phone shows the Remote active icon together with the
Shared - Active
status. You can add yourself to the ongoing call through the shared line. -
If your coworker puts a call on hold, the shared line on your phone shows the Remote on hold icon together with the
Shared - On hold
status. You can resume the held call through the shared line. -
If your coworker enables the privacy feature, the shared line shows as follows:

Shared - In use
status. - For other situations, the shared line always shows the Idle icon only.

Add yourself to a call on a shared line

If a user with whom you share a line turns on the privacy feature, you can't see their line status and you can't add yourself to their call.

Enable privacy on a shared line
Privacy prevents others who share your line from seeing information about your calling details and call history. It also limits the ability of others to see the call status.
Privacy applies to all shared lines on your phone. If you have multiple shared lines and privacy is enabled, others who share your line will be affected. They can only know the following two situations:
- The shared line is on a call. The icon is , and the status is
Shared - In use
. - For other call status on the shared line, it shows the icon only.
If the phone that shares your line turns on privacy, you can still make and receive calls using the shared line as usual.
